With the lambing of 420 North Country Cheviots now complete for 2022, we are busy calving the cows. The 24 Sim/Luing cows were served in July 2021 to calve in May 2022. They are served with Charolais semen which produce lovely strong, growthy calves. The heifers (ones calving for the first time) are served with Aberdeen Angus semen as this breed are renowned for being easier to calve. The heifers calve for the first time at 2 years old.
The Sim/Luing cows are a hardy breed designed to be outdoors. We therefore only keep them inside for 24-48hrs post calving. They are then turned out onto new grass to produce natural grass fed beef. Our aim is to produce as many Kilograms of beef per Hectare off grass as possible.
We sell all our calves through the live auction mart at approx. 6 months old to go on for further keep or breeding by the new buyer. We however purchase our female breeding replacements direct from the same farm every year. This allows us to maintain a high health status within our herd.
